Lakewood Co-op

Diet? No Thanks, I’ll have a cupcake instead. I have never been a dieter, I love sweets way too much. However, Jesse and I have both put on a couple pounds since the wedding, so in an effort to curb the extra pounds and try to be healthier, I started looking for ways that we could incorporate more fruits and vegetables into our diet. One day while reading the Lakewood Advocate, I read about Urban Acres, an organic co-op that provides fresh, seasonal, locally grown fruits and vegetables to its members twice a week. I don’t know why I jumped on the bandwagon, but I got really excited about it (just ask Jesse) and started talking to Jesse that night about joining.

To my delightment, Jesse had recently heard about a co-op that was in our neighboorhood from a doctor at Childrens. After talking to her about how much she liked it, Jesse and I decided to join the Lakewood Organic Co-0p. The co-op is run through Your Health Source and we pick up a delivery every other Saturday at a members house, who conveniently lives about a mile from us. We decided to do a half share, and I picked up our first delivery this morning. We get three deliveries to “try it out” without paying the $25 dollar annual membership fee, and to see whether we can incorporate the produce into our diet, how we feel about trying out new produce and recipes (the part I am most excited about) and to see how we like it.

We got a broad range of fruits and veggies Saturday. Everything from potatoes, bananas, oranges, apples, lemons (super plump, I already used the rind and half one in blueberry compote), celery, a red pepper, kiwi, lettuce, leeks, carrots, a giant red onion, leeks, an avocado, and some kind of green cilantro looking (but not cilantro) green veggie I am not quite sure what it is yet….

I have to admit, I am a little overwhemed with having so much produce , and a couple veggies that I don’t normally eat (i.e. – bell peppers) but I am kind of excited too! We get an email with our delivery giving us some new recipes and ideas for storing and using the produce, so I will definitely be referencing that for ideas and …. we’ll let you know how it goes!

March 12, 2010 - 10:28 pm Mom - Slice your bell pepper. Saute it with olive oil (or butter), onions, worchestershire, brown sugar, (celery) salt and pepper. Add it to fajita meat or eat by itself. The brown sugar really takes the bitter taste out of the bell pepper. Mom

April 8, 2010 - 12:29 pm Suzanna - Hey neighbors! I tried to join the Lakewood Co-Op after reading your post but they're claiming they don't have enough people for the group they're trying to stick me in and I'll have to pick up my own produce from Frisco! How did you get in so easily? We need to get together!! How do you know Ben too, through Jon and Steph?

April 7, 2010 - 3:23 pm Food Revolution » Starfish and Coffee - [...] differently, I will still be a customer, though hopefully less often). We have started by joining a co-op, so our produce is organic, and will start consistently buying organic milk and slowly start making [...]
